I managed to take a photo of this morning's total lunar eclipse. This was through the eyepiece of a pair of 7 x 50 binoculars, using my iPhone 4's camera. The photo was taken at about 6:30 a.m. EDT, a few minutes after the total phase began.
In a lunar eclipse, the Moon passes through the cone of the shadow of the Earth. If you stood on the Moon, you would see the Earth in front of the Sun, but the atmosphere of the Earth would be lit up with sunset colors from the Sun. So the Moon appears shades of orange or copper-brownduring an eclipse.
